Paintings 2021-2025

From 2021 to early 2024 I had a studio at the Biscuit Factory Studios in Newcastle, I’ve since moved into a home studio. 2023 brough an unprecedented level of loss in many forms, including multiple bereavements. It's unclear yet just how much my visual practice has been impacted, there are some motifs that have started appearing such as incomplete circles, which for me represent the hyper-awareness of having no idea exactly what’s coming next, or how far I am along a this journey.

Generally speaking though, I’m not looking to create work where the marks and colours have a causal, linear connection to events in my life. The titles are a better place for this, the work itself has non-verbal foundations and I don’t want to confuse things by post-rationalising.

Due to a few stop-start phases in my practice over the past several years I’ve also found myself with a large number of half-finished canvasses. It’s not really possible for me to ‘go back’ into the half-way point I was in, so the results have been quite varied in their direction.
