Brighton’s ARTY Magazine - Spring 2009
“The Descent into Tom’s Bar’s basement is an exploration of the deep, murky depths of the human mind. OK, not normally. But it was when we visited and local artist Jamie Shaw was in the middle of his first major installation. Emerging from the inky darkness, with the pallor that comes from too much time spent in enclosed spaces with paint cans, Jamie believes he has found the perfect expression for Tom’s. “I was reading a lot of Carl Jung’s stuff and thought that this would be a good place to do the journey down into the unconscious”.
Whether the reference to the Swiss psychoanalyst will be fully appreciated by caning clubbers at 2am doesn’t matter to Jamie. “I’m doing it for me”. After taking an Art Foundation course, Jamie is largely self-taught and refuses to be categorised. “I wouldn’t call myself a street artist - I don’t really know what genre to put my work in.””
